The National Education Association established Read Across America in 1998 to encourage children to read, with the purposeful scheduling to coincide with the March 2nd birthday of the beloved Dr. Seuss. It has grown from a single-day initiative into a week-long celebration. While originally focused on Dr. Seuss books, the program has evolved to emphasize diverse books and reading throughout the year.
Chester Mayor Stefan Roots, Darby Mayor Joar Dahn, Delaware County Sheriff Siddiq Kamara, Chester-born author Mysi Jones, and Chester Community Charter School (CCCS) CEO David Clark came together at CCCS’s West Campus to read to students in grades K through 5. This year’s theme was “Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers.”
